The Young Artist Competition Details
The Philharmonic Society of Arlington’s Young Artist Competition is a contest for individual vocalists and instrumentalists under 30 years of age. The 2009 competition will be held on Saturday, April 25 in Arlington Ma, which is easily accessible by public transportation.
Participants will be judged upon musicianship and quality of performance and will compete for the following prizes:
1. The Young Artist Performance Award – open to all contestants
· 1st Prize: $1000 and a performance with a Philharmonic Society’ orchestra or chorus during its 2009-2010 season. The prize will be awarded after the performance.
· 2nd Prize: $650
· 3rd Prize: $350
2. The Leonard D. Wood Award - open to contestants 18 years of age or younger
· 1st Prize: $500 and, at the discretion of the Society's musical directors, an opportunity to perform with the orchestra or chorus
· 2nd Prize: $350
· 3rd Prize: $150

Participants must be 29 years of age or under at
the time of the audition (date of birth:
· A non-refundable contest fee of $40 is due at time of application. (Make check payable to Philharmonic Society of Arlington.)
· Audition selections for both vocalists and instrumentalists must be 15 minutes or shorter in length. These works must be solos for instrument or voice with orchestral and/or choral accompaniment.
· The audition must include a piano reduction of the accompaniment. Contestants must provide their own accompanists. A list of known local pianists is available upon request.
· A limited number of auditions will be assigned, in order of receipt of applications. When all audition times have been filled, subsequent applicant will be offered a place on a waiting list.

· Participants must print and fill out the applications in full, including
§ Biographical information
§ Name of the audition selection(s)
§ Availability on the audition date
§ A prepared resume
· The competition committee will reject the application and return the application fee if
§ the audition schedule is filled, or
§ there is a disproportionate number of contestants in any one category (younger, older, instrumentalists, vocalists) or,
§ by the judgment of the committee, the applicant has not had sufficient experience to be auditioned
