The Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra brings together instrumentalists of all ages and musical experience. Under the direction of Music Director Walter Pavasaris and Assistant Conductor James Russell Smith, the Orchestra performs in five concerts during the season, the first in November, its Family Concert in February, two concerts with the Arlington-Belmont Chorale, and the PSA's Annual POPS! Concert in June.
The Orchestra also features the instrumental winners of our Young Artist Competition (YAC) as soloists in a wide variety of great works. This year, the 2007 YAC winner, soprano Dana Schnitzer, will perform with the Orchestra in its November Concert.
The APO's annual Family Concert is one of the PSA's outreach activities and is presented as a fun teaching vehicle aimed at our younger concert-goers, but it is also informative to our not-so-young listeners. In the past few years the Orchestra has given concerts entitled "Musical Patriots," "A Concert Brought To You By The Letter B," "Witches and Wizards" and "Musical Hats." This year's Family Concert is entitled, "A Musical Journey Through the West" and will feature Peiwen Liao, a thirteen year old violinist who won the First Place Leonard D. Wood Award in the 2007 PSA Young Artist Competition.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday night at 7:30 pm at The First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church in Arlington beginning the first Wednesday after Labor Day and continuing into June. Contact Margot Sudbury, chairperson of the Orchestra at orchestra@psarlington.org for more information.
