Barry Singer
Chorale and
Chamber Chorus
Conductor
Barry Singer, the conductor of both the Arlington-Belmont Chorale and the Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus, came up to those positions "through the ranks" so to speak. He first joined the Chorale and Chamber Chorus as a tenor in 1989, was appointed conductor of the Chamber Chorus in 1994, and named Assistant Conductor for the Chorale in 2000. Singer was formally named conductor of the Chorale in 2004 after spending a year as the Chorale's interim conductor on the retirement of John Bavicchi.

Mr. Singer received his degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music where he studied with composers John Bavicchi and Jeronimas Kacinskas. The PSA has premiered two of his works, "Three Times We Parted" (1992) written for the Chamber Chorus, and "Lux Aeterna" (2002), for the Chorale and Orchestra.

Mr. Singer has been an active musical performer since childhood. Although voice and piano are his principal instruments, he is also an accomplished flutist and has at various times in his career played assorted woodwind, keyboard, and string instruments professionally. His performance experience encompasses symphony orchestras, choruses and choirs of all types, opera and contemporary musical theater (both on stage and in the orchestra pit), jazz groups, and rock bands.

Mr. Singer is on the faculty at the Music Maker School in Acton, and maintains a private teaching studio in Arlington. Other current activity includes work as a freelance jazz pianist, baritone soloist with St. Peter's Church in Weston, piano accompanist for the Arlington Public Schools, and as keyboard/sax/flute player with the Boston-area dance band Firefly.

From 1983-1998, Mr. Singer sang with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, in numerous performances and recordings with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras. He participated in the Boston Symphony's 1994 Far East Tour, with performances in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Osaka, and sang with the multi-nation choral group which opened the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.

Mr. Singer has conducted several groups in recent years. In the spring of 2003, he was music director for the Arlington Friends Of The Drama production of "Fiorello!". Past directorships include the Oktoberfest Theater of Marlborough and the Sudbury Savoyards, and he has assistant-conducted or guest-conducted with the MIT Gilbert and Sullivan Players, and the Savoyard Light Opera Company. Additionally, Mr. Singer was a founder and co-leader of Serious Fun, a contemporary a cappella group performing in the Boston area, which recently released its first CD recording featuring many of his arrangements.

Mr. Singer resides in Arlington with his wife Betsy, their son Benn, and their daughter Chloe.
