Since 1965 the Philharmonic Society of Arlington has sponsored an annual competition for young musicians, both instrumental and vocal. Our purposes are to identify, encourage and provide exposure to promising talents, to provide them with audition experience, and to provide the winner with performance experience with our orchestra and/or chorale.
Three prizes are awarded: the $1000 first prize Peter Tannenwald Performance Award, which includes a performance with the Philharmonic the following concert season, a $650 second prize and a $350 third prize. These prizes are funded through the kind generosity of the estate of Peter Tannenwald, a long-time member of the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra and one of the Society's greatest proponents of the Young Artist Competition.
In addition to those prizes, the $500 Leonard D. Wood Prize is awarded to the best performer eighteen years of age or younger who may, at the discretion of the Society's musical directors, be asked to perform with the orchestra or chorus. A $350 second prize and a $150 third prize are also awarded. The Wood Prizes are provided by the family of Leonard D. Wood, the first conductor of the Community Symphony Orchestra of Arlington, later to be known as
the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra.
