The Young Artist
Competition - 2010 Winners
The Peter E. Tannenwald Awards, named in memory of one the Young Artist Competition's foremost supporters, consist of First prize, now $1000 and a solo appearance with either the Philharmonic Orchestra or the Chorale during the following concert season, and Second and Third Prizes of $650 and $350 respectively.
The Leonard D. Wood Awards, named in honor of Maestro Wood who conducted the Orchestra for many years, are intended to reward excellence in our younger contestants and to encourage them to continue to compete. It is awarded to a contestant who is 18 years of age or younger. The Wood Awards are $500 for First Place, $350 for Second Place and $150 for Third Place.
The Penelope Davis Hart Honorable Mentions are awarded at the discretion of the judges.

$1000 Performance Award
JOHN W. GOMEZ Venezuelan tenor John William Gomez has been praised for his exceptional interpretation of romantic music. Mr. Gomez made his New York City debut this past December singing Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème with Amore Opera. His next engagement in Boston will be singing Ruggero in Puccini’s La Rondine, opening February of 2010.
In 2005, Mr. Gomez won the New England Regional Metropolitan Opera Competition. He also won the NATS Competition (Boston) in 2006 and placed as a finalist in the Mario Lanza Competition in New York City in the summer of 2009. Most recently, Mr. Gomez received the Encouragement Award in the Classical Division of the Peter Elvins Vocal Competition.
Mr. Gomez has participated as a Young Artist with Tel-Aviv Opera and Seagle Music Colony and has sung with Boston Lyric Opera on many occasions. Last summer, he made his Jordan Hall debut with Opera Boston / Chorus Pro-Musica singing Dancairo in Carmen. An avid performer, Mr. Gomez has also sung at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney World, Sanders Theater, Duxbury Performance Center and Riverside Theater.
Major roles include Rodolfo (La Bohème), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Kaspar (Amahl and the Night Visitors).
Mr. Gomez began his musical studies in 2002 at Miami-Dade College under the guidance of Timothy Lester. He received his Bachelor of Music in Opera from The Boston Conservatory and continues to study there, pursuing his Master of Music degree, to be obtained in the Spring of 2010. Mr. Gomez currently studies with Dr. Rebecca Folsom.
